DETER * DETECT * DEFEND

www.ftc.gov is a one-stop national resource to learn about the crime of identity theft. It provides detailed information to help you deter, detect, and defend against identity theft.

On www.ftc.gov, consumers can learn how to avoid identity theft – and learn what to do if their identity is stolen. Businesses can learn how to help their customers deal with identity theft, as well as how to prevent problems in the first place. Law enforcement can get resources and learn how to help victims of identity theft.

DETER: Minimize Your Risk

While nothing can guarantee that you won't become a victim of identity theft, you can minimize your risk, and minimize the damage if a problem develops, by making it more difficult for identity thieves to access your personal information.

DETECT: Identify Suspicious Activity

The best way to detect identity theft is to monitor your accounts and bank statements each month, and check your credit report on a regular basis.

DEFEND: Take Action Immediately

What are the steps I should take if I'm a victim of identity theft?

If you are a victim of identity theft, take the following four steps as soon as possible, and keep a record with the details of your conversations and copies of all correspondence.

1. Place a fraud alert on your credit reports, and review your credit reports.

TransUnion: 1-800-680-7289; www.transunion.com; Fraud Victim Assistance Division, P.O. Box 6790, Fullerton, CA 92834-6790

Equifax: 1-800-525-6285; www.equifax.com; P.O. Box 740241, Atlanta, GA 30374-0241

Experian: 1-888-EXPERIAN (397-3742); www.experian.com; P.O. Box 9532, Allen, TX 75013

2. Close the accounts that you know, or believe, have been tampered with or opened fraudulently.

3. File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission.

4. File a report with your local police or the police in the community where the identity theft took place.

$1,000 NYS Tax Credit for Home Filling Station

The Business Review (Albany) - 5:01 PM EDT Wednesday, June 6, 2007

The New York state Senate has passed a tax exemption for hybrid and fuel-efficient vehicles.

Under the legislation, which must still be passed by the Assembly, the assessment of the state sales tax on the purchase of new and used hybrid vehicles would be waved. Also, beginning with 2008 models, vehicles that get at least 35 miles per gallon would be exempt from state sales tax.

A state tax credit on the purchase of hybrid vehicles expired two years ago. The legislation was passed by a unanimous vote.
